Will Wright and Montessori
Will Wright is one of the most famous game designers in history, most known for his popular video games SimCity and The Sims.
Wright also attended Montessori school, until 6th grade. As he describes it in his TED Talk, that experience was “the high point of my education.”
In an interview for The New Yorker, Wright shares more about his early schooling: “Montessori taught me the joy of discovery. It showed you can become interested in pretty complex theories, like Pythagorean theory, say, by playing with blocks. It’s all about learning on your terms, rather than a teacher explaining stuff to you. SimCity comes right out of Montessori — if you give people this model for building cities, they will abstract from it principles of urban design.”
